Advent is the beginning of the Christian calendar and has been observed since the ninth century. The season begins on Advent Sunday, the fourth Sunday preceding Christmas. In celebration of the coming of Christ, an Advent wreath consisting of a set of three purple and one pink candle is arranged in a green wreath, usually made of evergreens and/or boxwood.
The Traditional Ceremony on Advent Sunday, the first purple candle is lighted. Purple representing royalty and preparation. The next Sunday celebrates the coming of Christ with the lighting of the second purple candle. On the third Sunday of Advent, the pink candle is lit in celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The final purple candle is lit on the Sunday preceding Christmas. With the wreath completely illuminated the observance continues in anticipation of Christmas, the coming of the Christ Child.
